10 Fall Home Maintenance Tips

With the temperatures cooling down and the days getting shorter, now is the time to prioritize home projects that need to be completed before winter settles in. By taking the time to maintain your home during each season, you can keep common household problems at bay. Use these fall home maintenance tips to prepare your home for winter.

1. Clean gutters and downspouts.

Clear leaves and debris from gutters and downspouts to prevent flooding and freezing around your foundation. If your roof is too high or you just don’t have the right tools for the job, consider calling a professional. They can save you time and headaches.

2. Check your roof for signs of damage.

Carefully check your roof for missing or damaged shingles, warped flashing or other problems that might lead to leaks. Fall is a good time to hire a professional to perform a roof inspection. Any issues with your roof should be addressed promptly so that it will continue to keep your home warm and cozy in the winter.

3. Check furnace filters.

Inspect your furnace and replace the furnace filters. A properly-tuned furnace will run more efficiently, thus reducing your heating bills and extending the life of your furnace. Replacing your furnace filter according to the furnace instructions ensures contaminants are kept out of your blower fan and air return ducts.

4. Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

Test all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. It’s best to replace batteries annually. A good reminder is when daylight saving time ends in November. It’s also important to occasionally vacuum away dust and cobwebs in the area around your detector.

5. Prep your lawn.

Rake leaves and fertilize and aerate your lawn so you are prepared when spring arrives. You may also want to walk your property and ensure there aren’t any wayward branches on trees or overgrown shrubs.

6. Winterize your yard equipment.

The perfect time to inspect, clean, maintain, and winterize your equipment is after the first frost or during late fall. Empty gas from your lawn tools before winter arrives as it can cause damage if left in equipment. It’s also important to regularly clean and disinfect all your tools. Cleaning off the soil, sap, and grass clippings will help your tools continue to function properly and efficiently.

7. Store hoses and drain your sprinkler system.

Remove hoses from spigots. Drain and store them indoors, ensuring they are coiled and flat. In addition, you should drain your sprinkler system every fall to ensure there is no water remaining in the system. What may appear to be a harmless amount of water can ruin your underground pipes if it freezes.

8. Swap window screens for storm windows.

Remove screens and install storm windows to tackle stubborn drafts. Clean and repair screens before storing them in the basement or garage.

9. Check windows and doors.

Clean windows and any sliding door tracks to ensure they operate smoothly all year long. If you want to keep your house warm, winterizing the windows and doors can be your first line of defense. You may also want to consider adding insulation, weather stripping or caulk.

10. Stock up on winter supplies.

Now is the best time to stock up on the winter supplies you’ll need once the temperatures begin to drop. To save money, be on the lookout for sales online or at local retailers. Having a stockpile of wood or pellets to burn, a quality axe and other winter items are great to have on hand throughout the cold winter months.
